A final farewell
As we bid a final farewell to Karl this morning, it is hard to put into words the grief and emptiness that I have felt since I got the heart-shattering news.
The pain, the tears of the entire country is testament to the person he was, to the impact he had on people he met.
I've known Karl Gouder literally forever. We were born four months apart. We grew up together. Our families lived a few roads away from each other.
We went to Sixth Form together. We started in student politics together. At University, Karl was elected President of KSU while I was an activist in SDM.
In 2004, he was the campaign manager of my first MEP election. He knew the impossible odds and he did it anyway, because that's what friends do.
We laughed, we fought, we cried, we hugged, all our lives. In June, I was with him in the Counting Hall as the result of the European Parliament election filtered through. He was so proud of what we achieved, of how far we'd come.
Days ago, we spoke and shared our hopes for the PN and Malta with his bid to be Secretary-General.
It is with an unspeakable sadness that we have to now face the future without him.
I cannot imagine what he was going through, but I do know that we do not do enough to help people - particularly those in public roles. It has become too easy, too expected, to try to tear people down instead of helping them get back up. We must do better as a country, as a society and as a community.
Karl was a gentle man, a good man, a man who put others before himself. His loss will leave an unbearable hole in the future of Malta and Gozo, but those of us he left behind will pick up the pieces in his honour and in his memory.
Thank you for always being there for all of us, Karl. I am sorry that we couldn't be there for you when you needed it the most. Now rest...
